Study in Canada in 2020: English language test options

Proficiency in the English language is required to study in Canada. As a matter of fact, most Canadian universities and colleges stipulate it as a prerequisite to give admission to international students. However, due to covid – 19, most of the English test centers are closed. As a consequence, most of the Canadian institutions are shifting towards online testing service providers. Here are all the English language test options that international students have.

Academic

IELTS Academic is the most popular English language test, which is accepted by over 400 Canadian universities and colleges. It is also the only English test approved by IRCC that students can apply under Student Direct Stream to study in Canada. SDS is a fast-track application process under which students of 7 countries, including Indian, can obtain their study visas within 20 days. The IELTS academic result usually takes 13 days. As of now, the test centers are closed in some countries, but it is expected that they will be open soon if the situation improves.

IELTS Indicator

IELTS Indicator is a temporary measure by the IELTS organization to help students take their English language online from their homes. The test duration is the same as the IELTS paper-based test, i.e., 60 minutes each for Reading and Writing and 30 minutes for Listening. The Speaking module can be held either before or after the Listening, Reading, and Writing test and usually takes 11-14 minutes.

Pearson Test of English (PTE)

The Pearson Test of English is also an excellent choice for Canada study aspirants because it is accepted by over 90% of Canadian universities and colleges. It is also a computer-based test that has three parts. The speaking and writing part takes 77 – 93 min, reading 32 – 40 min, and the Listening part takes 45 – 57 min to complete. Pearson also offers a Versant English Placement Test, which takes around 50-minute to complete and is accepted by several international institutions.

Cambridge Assessment English

Cambridge Assessment English is another well-known test with two variants. One is paper-based, and the other is computer-based. The results of these tests usually come within 4-6 and 2-3 weeks, respectively. A significant advantage of taking the CAE exam is that it remains valid for a lifetime. Because of this, some Canadian universities and colleges accept it, even if the applicant has taken more than two years.

TOEFL

Over 400 Canadian universities and colleges accept the TOEFL Internet-Based Test. Like the other tests, it has the reading, listening, speaking, and writing sections. The test takes around 3 hours to complete, which includes a 10-minute break.

Not every Canadian university or college accepts all of these options. Therefore, before taking the exam, candidates are advised to make sure that the institute they choose also accepts that test. To study in Canada, please contact us on our website.
